water staining to the two plates, otherwise a good clean copy. the book has been recased at some point into the original plain leather binding, with new backstrip inserted and original spine re-laid. new end-papers. binding rubbed but sound, with no damage.

one of the last editions of David Steel’s long running text, providing invaluable source material on all aspects of the shipping world in the early decades of the 19th century. includes a 30-page chapter on the slave trade [Witt 140  –  though one of the few editions that he did not manage to have sight of for his bibliography]
