a celebrated 18th century Scottish murder trial. Mungo Campbell was charged with the murder of Alexander, Easr of Eglintoun, following an argument about poaching on the Earl’s lands near Ardrossan.
Campbell claimed that the fatal shooting was accidental, but he was found guilty and sentenced to hang.
Campbell cheated the hangman by taking his own life in prison.
