The Adventure Training Schooner 'Captain Scott'
Loch Carron Press have published an interesting book, The Adventure Training Schooner Captain Scott, written by Brian Rice.
The schooner was built by Herd & Mackenzie in Buckie, Scotland in 1971 and ran nine 26 day courses for young men each year off the west coast of Scotland until she was laid up in 1975.
She was eventually sold to Oman and became the Shabab Oman.
The author, who sailed on the Captain Scott and subsequently became a naval architect, explains why and how the Captain Scott was built, the key personnel involved, how she was funded, the format of the 37 courses held and the Outward Bound inspired philosophy behind them, as well as the reasons why she was laid up and her ultimate fate after she was sold to Oman in 1977.
This work includes many interesting and sometimes amusing recollections by the permanent crew and former trainees, of various incidents regarding the Captain Scott.
The book (ISBN 978-1-0369-1580-3) comprises 442 pages and 352 large format photos, almost half in colour, of her being built and at sea in all weathers.
The format is hardback with a sewn binding and dust jacket and costs GBP 45.00 plus post and packing.
