a scarce account of the 1882 six week cruise to the Mediterranean by the eight ships forming the Squadron of the First Reserve. The cruise served as an afloat exercise for the coastguard men who formed the naval reserve, and the author sailed as a guest on board the old iron-clad HMS ‘Defence’
