folio [33x21cm]. ppxxxvi 782

a little foxing in places, but a good clean copy in a strong Colonial Office library buckram binding with red spine lettering pieces. upper hinge pulling slightly. short tear in one of the folds of the chart

a highly important report on the state of the lighthouses, floating lights, buoys and beacons of Britain and Ireland in the mid-19th century – their management, efficiency, finance, etc., etc. The numerous witnesses included Alan Stevenson of the famous Steven family of lighthouse engineers, Captain John Washington, author of an influential report on safety in the fishing industry, and many other leading figures from the world of shipping, engineering, etc. The appendix contains a wealth of statistical information, relevant correspondence, etc. The report is accompanied by five lithograph plates and a superb multi-fold coloured chart showing the position of the lighthouses and light vessels on the coasts of Great Britain and parts of Europe
