King’s Ships

together with the important historical episodes connected with the successive ships of the same name from remote times, and a list of names and services of some ancient war vessels

by Halton S. Lecky.

London, Horace Muirhead, 1913-14.

3 volumes. 4to [29x22cm].  extensively illustrated, including a series of coloured plates from paintings by N. Sotheby Pitcher, illustrating seamen’s dress in various periods of history.

a very clean set internally, but the original blue cloth bindings have been affected by damp to the boards, causing some discolouration.  However the boards are perfectly sound, the gilt lettering and decoration is still very bright and the spines are unblemished.

an impressive alphabetical history of Royal Navy ships with a wealth of historical detail, intended to be published in six volumes, but never progressing beyond volume 3, terminating with “Jupiter”.
