John Roach was one of America’s foremost shipowners and shipbuilders of the 19th century, and this attack on the unfair market-place created by England’s maritime policies over the past hundred years was written shortly before the collapse of his business empire, which was placed in liquidation in 1885, and his own death in 1887.
