England’s Maritime Policy, the cause of the Decline of American Shipping

by John Roach.

small 60 page booklet

the original printed wrappers are a bit edge worn and grubby, and the front wrapper is loose. Essex Institiute stamp to front cover. internally clean, with ‘The American Protectionist’ and ‘Card Catalogued’ stamped to first page.

no publication details given, but apparently written and published ca. 1883.

John Roach was one of America’s foremost shipowners and shipbuilders of the 19th century, and this attack on the unfair market-place created by England’s maritime policies over the past hundred years was written shortly before the collapse of his business empire, which was placed in liquidation in 1885, and his own death in 1887.

Very scarce, with WorldCat recording only four American library holdings.
